Kihei, Maui —In celebration of national Geography Awareness Week, the Maui Economic Development Board’s Women In Technology (WIT) will be partnering with Hawaii’s Geographic Information System (GIS) professionals to host its annual GIS Day on Oahu, November 17th and Maui, November 21st and its live statewide GIS Day webcast for Hawai’i K-12 schools.

UH Maui College will be presenting “A NIGHT AT THE AQUARIUM: GIS Certificate Showcase”, a free, public event hosted by UHMC’s Certificate of Competence GIS in Ecosystem Management Program, the University of Hawai’i, & the Maui Ocean Center.

Over 700 teachers from across the state converged to Nanakuli High & Intermediate School for a day packed with presentations and hands-on learning to take back to their classrooms to promote various types of STEM education and tools.

Two Maui intermediate schools received iPads to promote and create “innovative learning environments.” Lokelani and Kalama Intermediate School students received these iPads as a $2.5 million donation by Verizon in partnership by Digital Promise to lead the way in digital learning.

Women in Technology’s Island Energy Inquiry™ Program, in partnership with Ka Hei, completed three workshops within the last several months, reaching 71 teachers across the state.

Elementary teachers around Maui took part of a two-day workshop in September which unveiled the new hands-on energy focused IEI Elementary Curriculum! Teachers were able to use and test run the various elementary kits offered by the workshop.

The Women in Tech Project is excited to partner with UH STEM Pre-Academy and Maui High’s Digital Media Lab in offering – Using iPads in the K12 Classroom. The workshop will cover documenting, sharing and how to store student projects, events and lessons through digital storytelling using iPads. Workshop open to all K-12 teachers.

The STEMworks AFTERschool program kicks off at Lana’i High and Elementary School with a fun night of STEM and science activities for students and families to explore! Students learned about coding, cybersecurity, SketchUp, digital media, UAVs/Drones and Geospatial technology!

Women in Technology has partnered up with ecoQoob to inspire and excite the next generation leaders on Energy Efficiency with their new educational mobile app that’s currently under development for iOS and Android. This app allows users to become “energy detectives” and find ways for their home to be more efficient by creating their house on the app to see the various electronics around their household and to see how much energy it uses and how much it costs.
